Difference between joint and muscle pain

Experiencing any type of pain can be frustrating, especially if you aren’t sure where it’s coming from or what is causing it. Knowing the difference between joint and muscle pain is important so you know how to properly treat your pain and find relief quickly and efficiently. Our team at Wisniewski Chiropractic is here to help you treat muscle and joint pain.

Joint pain

When experiencing joint pain it is common to feel aches, soreness and discomfort. Joints are the points where your body and bones meet, such as your shoulders, hips, elbows and knees. Symptoms of joint pain include:

  • Swelling

  • Redness

  • Tender or warm to the touch

  • Pain lasting for more than three days

  • Fever without signs of the flu

If you experience these symptoms, it is advised that you seek the care of a doctor. An x-ray might be necessary to diagnose a joint related injury.

Treatment for joint pain

To manage joint pain it may be recommended to stay active but moderate your exercise levels, stretch before any physical activity or even try a massage to help with soreness. Using heat or ice is a good short-term solution to relieve pain.

Muscle pain

Muscle aches and pains aren’t uncommon, overuse or injury is common and can be a reason for why you’re experiencing pain. When it comes to muscle aches and pain most people know the instance that caused the injury. Muscle aches can happen due to:

  • Overuse of muscle

  • Injury during physical activity

  • Lack of warming up or cooling down when exercising

  • Too much stress or tension

Treatments

In order to treat muscle aches and pains, sometimes rest is the best thing. Other treatments include applying ice to help relieve pain and help reduce inflammation. Ice should be applied for the first three days and heat for the following days that remain. More treatments include light stretching and avoiding high-impact workouts until pain subsides.
