What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a metabolic disease that causes high blood sugar. Insulin is a hormone that moves sugar from the blood into your cells to be stored and used for energy. When you have diabetes your body can either struggle to make enough insulin or it have issues using it effectively. If high blood sugar goes untreated for too long, it can affect and damage your nerves, eyes, kidneys and other organs. During this month it is important to learn how to prevent and manage diabetes, not only to help you but those around you who have been diagnosed!

Types of Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks and destroys cells located in the pancreas. The pancreas is where insulin is made, but it still remains unclear what causes the attack of the pancreas.

Type 2 diabetes is when your body rejects insulin and causes sugar to build up in your blood. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes.

Gestational diabetes is high blood sugar experienced during pregnancy. The placenta can produce insulin-blocking hormones which cause this kind of diabetes.

Diabetes insipidus is a rare condition and is not related to diabetes mellitus (the forms of diabetes listed above). This condition is when your kidneys remove too much fluid from your body.
