What to eat and drink during cold and flu season

A small appetite is normal if you are feeling sick, but eating can be a good idea to help the body gain strength to beat an illness.

Hydration

You’ve heard it once, you’ve heard it a thousand times! Stay Hydrated! Staying hydrated not only when you’re sick is essential because of your body losing water through sweat and possible fevers. Being congested is common during cold and flu season and drinking water throughout the day can help break up that congestion which makes it easier to breathe. If you grow tired of water and need to mix it up there are also other ways to stay hydrated while fighting an illness! Here are a few:

-Broth

-Ginger tea

-Herbal tea and honey

-Honey and lemon tea

-100% juice (with no added sugar)

-Sports drinks with electrolytes

Food

When feeling under the weather your body is going to need any nutrients it can get! Eat the right food so you can have a speedy recovery and get to feeling better soon.

Soup

Chicken soup is a classic for a reason! Nearly everything found in it will help you recover when you’re sick. The fluids from the broth are great for hydration, chicken has protein and zinc, carrots provide vitamin A, celery and onions provide vitamin C and herbs have lots of antioxidants.

Garlic

If eating raw garlic seems strange to you, try incorporating it into more foods when you’re sick! It has been shown that garlic has benefits that help reduce the severity of flu symptoms. If raw garlic isn’t your favorite, there are garlic supplements that can be taken instead.

Yogurt

Because of all of the probiotics in yogurt, it is considered to be a good source of nutrients for your body. When you are sick, probiotics are good to help support the immune system. If you work probiotics into your diet when ill, it has been shown that the duration of the flu can be shortened.

Fruits and vegetables with vitamin C

The more you eat foods with vitamin C, the faster your body can absorb it! These fruits and vegetables are very high in vitamin C and are recommended to be eaten especially when sick.

-Red and green bell peppers

-Oranges

-Grapefruit

-Kiwi

-Broccoli
