Is cauliflower acutally good for you?

Kale, who is that? We only know cauliflower! Cauliflower is the latest vegetable to hit the healthy craze and it does not seem to be slowing down! Cauliflower is a great substitute for low-carb options and it can easily be snuck into foods. Try it in your smoothies for an extra boost of fiber and getting in another vegetable during a crazy day.

Wisniewski Chiropractic is part of the Thrive Wellness Omaha and one of the services that we offer to everyone is nutritional counseling!  Let’s break down if this new trend is actually good for you!

Advantages

Cauliflower is a vegetable that is high in fiber and B-vitamins that provides antioxidants which can even help prevent certain types of cancer! Yes, a veggie could possibly lower the risk of cancer. How crazy. Why is cauliflower finally getting the attention of the world?

  • Low calories

  • Full of magnesium, fiber, potassium, vitamin C, vitamin K, vitamin B, folate, calcium and other amazing ingredients we need!

  • Cancer fighting power

Wow, all of this from one cup of cauliflower? Yup, it is true. While broccoli and kale weeps in the corner, cauliflower has been gaining traction in sales and consumption. Cauliflower is also a dense vegetable. Our Thrive Wellness Omaha nutritional counselors explain that this means you need less of this vegetable compared to others that are high in water or other ingredients.

There has been an increase in the type of food that cauliflower is substituting from steak to buffalo wings, if you can think of it, it probably has been substituted with cauliflower!

From 2017 to 2018 the consumption of cauliflower raised over 300 percent! This is because cauliflower allows for a variety of substitutions for those looking to consume more vegetables and eat less carbohydrates; however, there are downfalls to consuming too much cauliflower.

Disadvantages

How could a vegetable like cauliflower have any disadvantages? While cauliflower is the superfood of the past couple years, our Thrive Wellness Omaha nutritional counselors wants everyone to understand the disadvantages of this vegetable.

When someone is constantly consuming cauliflower, this can interfere and react with iodine levels inside the human body. This can affect how your body absorbs iodine which can cause issues of hypothyroidism. This causes a decrease in metabolism, dry skin and hair, weight gain and other common issues.

For those who are on a blood thinner, please do not consume an abundant amount of cauliflower. This is due to the high levels of Vitamin K inside of the vegetable. This can cause blood thinners to do the opposite of what they are supposed to do for your body.

A minor issue that can be caused is an increase in gas and bloating throughout the day which makes a person feel very uncomfortable. Cauliflower is high in fiber and too much fiber does the EXACT opposite for a body.

Well, that is the verdict. Yes, cauliflower is good for a person to consume but it should not be overconsumed.
